JKD triumphant in UFC 106

Visit Kung Fu Weapon World for all things Kung Fu Weapons!

Not too many UFC fighters claims to be a Jeet Kune Do fighter.  One of the up and coming fighter in the UFC, Ben "Killer B" Saunders is one of the exception.  Proudly proclaiming JKD as his striking art, Ben Saunders used his great clinch work and superb knee strikes to quickly dispatch of a well respected contender in Marcus Davis.

JKD's concept is one of taking the thing that works for you, and discard others which doesn't.  The concept, while sounds like the logical thing to do, is extremely hard.  Due to the fact that in order to truely take in only the things that work for you, one has to be brutally honest with oneself, and the type of honesty required is seldom seem in the majority of people.

Here is to all the open minded martial artists out there.  Train smart, and train honestly and express yourself the way you are.

Kung Fu movie making the hard way: Gordon Liu interview

Jet Li, Jackie Chan, Donnie Yen, all these names might be very familiar to any movie fan out there, but the name Gordon Liu might not be as well known.  How about the kung fu actor who played Pai Mei in Kill Bill 2?  Now you know who I am talking about.

Tarantino is well documented as an aficionado of old Hong Kong Kung Fu flicks, and Gordon Liu was one of the best from the 70's.  His breakout movie, the 36 Chambers of Shaolin, ensures that he will always have a place in the Kung fu movie Hall of fame.  Check out this in depth interview with Gordon Liu, he talks about a lot of interesting details of what it was like to work in the kung fu movie industry back in 1970's Hong Kong.

Rope Dart? Is it really a weapon?

Swords, Spears, Nunchuks, Tonfa!  All of these kung fu weapons immediately sounds like deadly pieces of weaponary upon hearing their syllables, but rope dart?  What is that?  Is it a kids toy?

Well, not a lot of people are masters of this special type of weapon, but it is a legitimate weapon of the ancient Chinese martial arts.  It is basically a metal dart(blunt or sharp) that is attached to a long rope.  It can be easily concealed due to the flexibility of the rope and the small size of the dart.  How much actual damage it can actually deal is something else.  It is definitely a secondary long range sneak attack weapon in nature.

here is a video of the rope dart, and its close cousin: the meteor hammer in action, check it out!

Tony Jaa does it Again!

Tony Jaa does it again in his latest action flick, Ong Bak 2.  This movie has no apparent link to the previous installment, Ong Bak, which was set in modern day Thailand.  This sequel, however, has the setting of ancient Thailand during the conflict between the ancient empire of Sukothai and Ayuthaya.

Tony Jaa plays a kung fu prodigy whoes whole family was killed by the ambitious warlord.  His sole purpose in life thereafter is to avenge his loss.

The weak and cliched plots aside, the action is the meat and potatoes of the film.  For the first time, we get to see extensive weapons skills display from Tony Jaa.  We have always known about his Muay Thai/Boran and Wushu expertise, but never before has he shown his superb talent in using all kinds of kung fu weapons.

Dan Inosanto is a first generation student of the legend, Bruce Lee.  Their relationship is one of mutual respect as Bruce Lee was also learning some intricacies of the Filipino fighting art from Dan.
